Kerry Griechen: Louisiana’s Singular Swamps
A local photographer wins international acclaim, five times over
Perhaps as a non-native, photographer Kerry Griechen was primed better than someone born and raised in Louisiana to seek out and appreciate the state’s unusual landscapes. Upon moving to Acadiana nearly twenty years ago from southwest Michigan, Griechen became “mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the region’s natural swamplands.”
Though it risks stating the obvious, one really cannot overemphasize the unrivaled singularity of Louisiana’s geography and ecology—a singularity which Griechen attempts to capture in studied compositions that “find the visual balance” among the elements he is photographing.
Last month, five of his photographs were selected as finalists in a contest organized by the Fondation du Grand-Cachot-de-Vent, an art and culture collective in an area of northwest Switzerland bordering France. His piece titled “Center Stage” won first place. (Last fall, “Center Stage” was also displayed at The Burke Museum in Seattle, Washington as a finalist in the International Conservation Photography Awards.)
The Swiss contest, called “The Marshes of the World,” was intended to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of an environmental stewardship agency in the region. The winning photographs will be featured at an exhibition to be held at Grand-Chacot.
When he is not out communing with the gators and egrets, you might find Griechen amongst the flora and fauna of New Orleans or teaching en plein air photography classes to both novices and pros.
