The Fight

A profile of photographer David Humphreys

Amongst the surreal, sometimes jarring work of artist David Humphreys, there exists a common thread:

“Everything starts with a photograph,” said Humphreys. But from there, his path  grows unpredictable.

Over the course of his thirty-four-year career, Humphreys has been manipulating and layering photographs, even before the advent of Photoshop and the user-friendly Instagram.

“Visualization and seeing is really the key,” he said. “Conceptualizing and using your mind to come up with something that doesn’t exist in reality. Here’s the way I put it: I don’t just take photos, I make photos.”

When photo-editing technology did gather steam, he welcomed the updates. “It’s an important aspect to my career, I think,” said Humphreys. “I learned how to create certain special effects in-camera that now I can do with Photoshop and other software.

“Sometimes you create failure, but you go past the failures and continue on until you have breakthroughs and create something special.” k
