Serenity and Spice

A look inside the new Red Stick Spice

I have to wonder if Red Stick Spice Company was behind the roar and shambles of parking lot construction outside their new Jefferson Highway location this morning. “Bad timing” was the party line—after all, today marks the grand opening—and yet what better way to showcase the shop’s inherent serenity? Outside, the world’s a loud, noisy mess. But step inside the aromatic sanctuary that is Red Stick Spice and the most chaotic thing you’ll find is looseleaf tea.

It helps too that the store is now situated in a neighborhood strip mall, just on the fringes of Capital Heights. I find such immersive experiences resonate more when reached on foot—easily done in the pedestrian-friendly area. Do you need to go with a shopping list? Probably not, unless you’d like to curb yourself from spending in excess because in that quiet, beautiful shop, all the packets and canisters contained on the shelves and bunched on wooden tables throughout—it all just gleams in natural light—look like ingredients for the sort of life you should be living. Aspiration is treacherous … oh, but it smells so good.
