Francisco "Pastel" Diaz makes his return to Baton Rouge

The work of internationally renowned muralist Francisco Diaz is easily identifiable. Resplendent, imposing flora placed as landmarks in the midst of dense urbanity to transform dull structures into sweeping ecosystems teeming with life. Based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Diaz—or “Pastel,” as he’s known in the art world—relies on the natural world to inform his work, making him well-suited to the role of resident artist for the upcoming Art of Food dinner, a partnership between Country Roads, Louisiana Public Broadcasting, and Ann Connelly Fine Art, on November 6.

Diaz’s striking visuals will reappear in edible form when Chef Jeffrey Hansell of Covington’s Oxlot 9 restaurant prepares his interpretation of Diaz’s oeuvre in a four-course lineup at Lamar Advertising Headquarters. In Diaz’s sprawling painted scenes, creeping verdure ascend five-story cement structures or grow alongside low-hanging dwellings, prompting onlookers to consider nature’s biodiversity and adaptability. “I started to put them on a really big scale to glorify them and the idea of preserving the local things,” said Diaz.
