Dear Readers …

A message to lovers of Country Roads' Calendar of Events

by

But don’t worry. Our writers and editors are still working hard to bring you the best of the still-present artistry and entertainment cooked up by our own resilient institutions. The world’s oldest known melody, “Hurrian Hymn No. 6,” has survived since the fourteenth century B.C.E., after all; the paintings on the cave El Castillo still mesmerize after forty thousand years; the Songs of Chu continue to send readers on “spirit journeys” long after the Qin wars of conquest. In other words, what time we lose now is only a blip on the great human calendar, and a new season of art and celebration is always just around the corner.

In the meantime, we’ve rounded up a handful of rescheduled events for you to look forward to, as well as a few outdoor activities that never go out of style. A look outside and a read through Terry Jones’ “Pastimes” essay of the month—an ode to yo-yo fishing—reminds one that the natural world remains generally unphased, and perhaps even better than usual thanks to lower-than-normal levels of air pollution. Plus, homebodies can still take part in community reads like the East Baton Rouge Library’s “One Book, One Community” initiative, focusing on Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (whose “We Should All Be Feminists” TED Talk, let’s not forget, was featured on Beyoncé’s track “***Flawless,” which would certainly be a peak, if not the peak, of basically anyone’s career).

Local booksellers are still slinging their recommendations, local musicians are still playing and writing from the safety of their living rooms and studios, and event planners are doing their best to deliver what may turn out to be one of the most celebratory falls in recent memory.

Remember that the dates listed below are dates announced as of press time; please check before making plans. For now, sit back, relax, and let our pages take you to better days. Oh, and don’t forget to wash your hands.
