Georgia-Pacific

Committed to education, environment, entrepreneurship, and community enrichment

Nestled in the unique environment of the Mississippi River, surrounded by a flourishing Southern forest and located near an historic Civil War site, is the Georgia-Pacific Port Hudson Operations. Here, the employees combine a dedication to safety and a commitment to the environment to produce a high quality product for their customers.

Georgia-Pacific’s Port Hudson Operations was established in 1968 and is located on 1,350 acres in East Baton Rouge Parish. More than 850 employees manufacture Brawny® paper towels and Quilted Northern Soft and Strong® bath tissue. Port Hudson also produces Spectrum® papers used in printing and laser and ink-jet printers.

Georgia-Pacific’s core philosophy is anchored in a belief that for a business to survive and prosper, it must develop and use its capabilities to create sustainable value for both its customers and society.

Port Hudson employees are committed to running the mill safely and responsibly. They also are active participants in their communities, contributing time and talent to diverse organizations. Georgia-Pacific believes that strong communities are good for business.

Georgia-Pacific has no doubt that working directly with local organizations is critical to the success of our community involvement. To maximize our impact, the Georgia-Pacific Foundation and the Port Hudson Operations invest in four key areas:

Education--The Port Hudson Operations has been a long-time supporter of education in our community. We also invest in scholarships and technical programs that give workers the skills necessary for today’s workplace. LSU scholarships, Back to School events, and our support for all the Zachary schools are just a few of the areas that our mill supports for education in the community.

Community Enrichment--Our investments support such community needs and our employees are also engaged in the community and volunteer with various organizations. The Capital Area United Way, the Baton Rouge Food Bank, the Baton Rouge Symphony, Woman’s Hospital, and the American Cancer Society receive support from both Port Hudson and our employees.

The Environment--At Georgia-Pacific, we believe a healthy environment is essential to healthy communities and a thriving society. We are committed to 100 percent environmental compliance and invest in organizations that foster environmental responsibility and provide environmental learning opportunities, including those that promote source reduction, recycling, reuse and cleaner air. We have been an active supporter of Louisiana Earth Day for over 20 years.

Entrepreneurship--Port Hudson supports organizations that create long-term value for the community through programs that promote entrepreneurial development while fostering economic and critical thinking skills. We especially focus on initiatives that align with our company’s Market Based Management® philosophy such as Junior Achievement.

The Port Hudson Operations is a totally integrated mill—from whole logs to final products shipped to store shelves. The process all begins in the Woodyard where the mill receives whole logs and chips. This area performs the first critical step in the production of quality and uniform pulp. It classifies the chips according to thickness and size prior to being fed to the digester.

Our pulp mill consists of three major areas: digesters, washing and screening and bleach plant. Each area has an important role in assuring quality pulp production while maintaining a cost-effective operation.

In addition to supplying the mill with water, instrument air, steam, and electricity, the Power and Utilities area plays an integral role in the process of pulp production. Through a sustainable process, it also supplies nearly all the electricity needed to run the facility.

The two fine paper machines at Port Hudson are among the largest and fastest in the world. The machines run GP Spectrum and private label office papers. The mill produces 8.5” x 11”, 8.5” x 14”, 11” x 17” and 3-hole drilled papers.

Our newest machine runs Quilted Northern Ultra Soft and Strong® which uses the new proprietary tissue technology developed by Georgia-Pacific. Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong® bath tissue is still soft as ever and 100% biodegradable, so it’s sewer and septic safe.

The towel machine at Port Hudson is a towel “through air dried” machine. This machine runs both Brawny® and private label brand towels. Brawny® paper towels, with FlexTech™ design is also soft and strong.
