Don't Miss the Midwest

I’m just back from a visit to see my mom in the Midwest, and I have two observations from that trip to share: 1. The Midwest is a delightful vacation destination, that is vastly underreported. 2. You really can pack for a week in one of those small bags that count as a “personal item” on the ultra-budget airlines, the only free luggage you’re allowed. Spirit, the most loathed, yet heavily booked of those ultra- budget airlines, currently offers roundtrip fares from New Orleans to Chicago that start at well under a $100. If you don’t pay for luggage. So check the dimensions allowed for a “personal item” and practice packing in one. I have a gym bag that just meets the requirements, into which I can fit my dopp kit, underwear, several t-shirts, shorts and an extra pair of shoes. Wear long pants and anything else bulky aboard.

And as much as I love Chicago and all the amazing things to do there, I urge you to rent a car and drive away! Did you know that in the delightful college town of Madison, Wisconsin, two hours away, you’ll find the Unitarian church that Frank Lloyd Wright’s parents attended, and which he designed? Or that a Madison suburb is home to the often hysterical National Mustard Museum? I promise you’ll be glad you visited. Or head three hours south of O’Hare to the riveting Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield and the stunningly restored streetscape next door where he lived. Springfield also boasts a couple of beautiful Frank Lloyd Wright designed homes. There’s so much more. But this will be enough I think to enroll you in the Midwest Fan Club.
