Harmony of the (High) Seas

The world's largest ship

As I write this, the world’s largest ship is steaming its way across the Atlantic to its new homeport in Fort Lauderdale. (Well not literally, of course. New ships are powered by electric thrusters.) I had the chance to sail on one of Harmony of the Seas’ first cruises last summer when it was in the Mediterranean. I had fun. But once will probably be enough for me. That said, if you love cruising you should do one of these mega-ships at least once. There were times when being in the public areas felt like being in a mall on Black Friday. But then there were mornings when I strolled through Central Park nearly alone. (Yes there is a full-fledged park in the middle of the ship, complete with trees and sidewalk cafes.) There is also spectacular entertainment aboard including a Cirque du Soleil-like aqua-theatre diving show, and an ice-skating spectacular on the ship’s real ice rink. And a ten story slide. In this case I’d recommend finding a travel agent who specializes in cruises to help you get the best deal and the most perks thrown in. (Drinks, wifi, and shore excursions add up quickly.) I can suggest a great way to get to Fort Lauderdale though.  Southwest Airlines' current winter sale offers fares there starting at $59 each way from New Orleans. And you get two suitcases free, so you can be properly outfitted for formal night aboard.
