Highly Seasoned Travelers

A while back I talked about what an excellent value repositioning cruises are. Having just stepped off one such cruise from Tampa to Barcelona, I thought I'd share a few thoughts while they are fresh in my mind.

"It's nice to be crossing with such a young crowd," quipped the entertainer onstage on one of the first nights of the fourteen-day crossing. Looking across the audience, she of course saw a sea of gray hair (for those unlike me lucky enough to still have hair). Yes, longer cruises skew older, but transatlantic crossings also draw a host of highly seasoned travelers, and all that time at sea gives you lots of opportunities to get to know them. From our dinner companions alone we learned about Costa Rica from someone who originally went there with the Peace Corps, and has now lived there forty-three years. We learned about the delights of Singapore from the couple across the table whose son has lived there for the last three years. And about Rio from the multinational couple whose daughter was born in Sweden but lives in Brazil now. Thanks to innumerable conversations like these, my carefully selected Kindle contents, and my origami classes (the results of which are shown here) the time flew by.
