The oldest city in the continental U.S. is also home to one of the nation's most beautiful Christmas light displays. St. Augustine is beautiful and fascinating any time of year, but especially so during its "Nights of Lights" throughout he holiday season. It's about a ten-hour drive from Baton Rouge, but at the moment you can fly to nearby Jacksonville round-trip from New Orleans for an amazing $78. I found that fare Tuesday morning over a weekend in mid-December. Now that's on Allegiant, which means no free luggage, but you'd be amazed how much you can fit into the "personal item" they allow you if you're clever. Just make sure you check the dimensions carefully on their website.
