Cajun Bayou Culture Calendar

Art shows, museum exhibitions, and more entertainment events

If you’re aiming to expand your cultural horizons this summer, look no further than Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou. Lafourche Parish has a calendar stacked with haute happenings. From live music finally returning to the stage, to enriching gallery exhibitions and annual art shows, there’s no shortage of opportunities to get out and experience the region’s rich culture.

First thing’s first, you’ll want to tour the interactive traveling Smithsonian exhibition Water/Ways, which investigates the various ways water influences the historical, environmental, and cultural landscapes of the Cajun Bayou. Upcoming weekly events held in conjunction with the exhibit include a family-friendly “Water Discovery Day,” with hands-on activities and experiments. The exhibit runs through the end of the month at Jean Lafitte Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, so hurry over before it’s gone.

Also hosted by the Acadian Cultural Center is Music on the Bayou, a free event recurring every Saturday from 2–3 pm designed to showcase a wide range of Louisiana music, from Cajun and gospel to jazz and blues. Whether you’re a trained musician moseying for new neighbors to perform with, or simply fond of a good old-fashioned, foot-stomping jam session, the players’ circle is always open.

Take a trip down to Thibodaux September 10–12 to find a new favorite collectible for a good cause at the forty-fourth annual TaWaSi Antiques and Arts Show. Founded in 1947, the TaWaSi Civic Club derives its name from the Native American noun meaning “friend” or “helper.” Staying true to its philanthropic roots, all proceeds from the show go toward worthy projects, schools, and charities in the Lafourche area. Top-notch antiques and art dealers will gather from across the country to display their furniture, jewelry, books, glassware, art, silver, tools, and more. Happy hunting! lacajunbayou.com.
