Looking to get the most out of the great outdoors this summer without risking a heatstroke? Take a trip up to North Louisiana for a moonlight paddle, the newest offering in offbeat outdoor adventures. Explore the waterways of Webster Parish via kayak or canoe immersed in the natural serenity—and cooler temperatures—of the evening sunset as it dips into dusk (just don't forget the bug spray).

“We’re out on the water just before the sun sets. We paddle along as the moon rises between the cypress and glitters across the rippled water. If you’re quiet then the frogs will serenade you, but normally we are a talkative bunch,” says Sarah Philyaw of the Bayou Chapter of the Ozark Society, the host organization of these paddling excursions.

With good company, good conversation, and a couple of motorboats for safety, a moonlight paddle makes for the perfect Louisiana summer night. If you’re lucky, the experience might even end with a bonfire and some tall tales.

If you want to partake in a paddle for yourself, the group’s next moonlit outing will be June 25 on Lake Bistineau. Though most of the organization’s events are for members only, anyone with a passion for the preservation of wild and scenic rivers, wilderness, and unique natural areas is welcome to join.

Kayaking by moonlight not your thing? Lucky for you, Webster Parish is home to ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Webster Parish Paddle Trail is perfect for a daytime paddle. With two courses, novices and pro paddlers alike can find a path to suit their fancy. The first, a course on Lake Bistineau that’s just shy of ten miles, is a great choice for a beginning paddler. The second course, just under six miles, is found between Dixie Inn and Sibley and is a prime course for more experienced paddlers.
