Discover little-known Louisiana history in and around the heart of Webster Parish, making it well worth the journey up to this culturally rich region.

The Germantown Colony State Museum, located just north of Minden, is a historical preservation project and part of Louisiana’s Heroes and Heritage Trail. Established in 1835, the unique colony was one of three in the U.S. founded by a group of German settlers who were part of the utopian Harmony Society. They arrived in the isolated wilderness and thrived as a community for nearly forty years, and visitors can get a glimpse of their history brought to life through the museum’s trove of historical artifacts and original early nineteenth century structures, including the settlement’s cemetery.

As one of eighteen scenic byways in the state, the Boom or Bust Byway gets its name from the many agricultural and landmark industries its route has seen come and go over the decades. Following Highway 2 through four parishes, this road trip is a tour off the beaten path, meandering through 130 miles of lush farm landscape. In between crop fields filled with the season’s harvest or grazing livestock, you’ll find great biking paths, fishing holes, antique shops, local diners, and more.
