One Book, One Community Events

Exploring Mark Twain’s “Life on the Mississippi”

Sponsored by the East Baton Rouge Parish Library

In addition to a kickoff party planned for February 11, at which Mark Twain “himself” will make an appearance, the East Baton Rouge Parish Library has planned a gamut of activities related to the One Book One Community (OBOC) selection this spring, taking place at all EBRP Library branches.

There are various free events, programs, book talks, crafts, and other fun and informational events related to the book—all free, of course. For instance, “This Mark Twain Goes to Cosplay—A Cubee Parody” will be held at the Zachary Branch Library for teens all spring. In addition, a OBOC book discussion will be held at Eden Park Branch Library 6 pm on Thursday, February 6.

You can crochet a Mark Twain-esque bow tie from 3pm–5 pm, on February 9, at Eden Park Branch. Or if movies are more your speed, the Library will be screening Hal Holbrook’s Mark Twain Tonight! at 10:30 am, February 16, at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library or The Adventures of Huck Finn at 2:30 pm, March 4, at the Fairwood Branch.

Adults might enjoy a “Down the Mississippi” jeopardy game, scheduled for 7 pm, March 9, in which participants will answer questions about the river’s history, geography, and literature. Plus, the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge is preparing a hands-on exhibit titled A Pilot's Life for Me: Piloting on the Mississippi River June 13—September 16 (louisianaoldstatecapitol.org).

There’s lots more to come, as well. For more details, visit ebrpl.libguides.com/twain, call  (225) 231-3750, or visit BatonRouge200.com.
