Spring Delights in St. Martin

Glamping, cracklins, and creative placemaking

The spring calendar for St. Martin Parish is chock full of events you won’t want to miss. April 6—9, the Pont Breaux Glamping Rally will be held. Come see the special twist Cajun ladies have added to glamping, with creatively decorated and restored classic RVs, spiked tea parties, and a general celebration of women getting out into nature—in style and comfort. Men are welcome at the open house on Saturday, provided they then go away. April 9, come by Parc des Ponts de Pont Breaux for a free performance by the Six-String Soldiers, a four-man acoustic group made up of members of the US Army Field Band. Bring your own blanket and enjoy bluegrass, folk, and Irish music played for you by a few of our nation’s heroes.

The Semaine de la Francophonie Creative Placemaking Summit will take place from April 17—21. This weeklong symposium, undertaken by the NUNU Collective in conjunction with the French consulate in New Orleans, will continue the conversation previous year’s events have begun, inviting internationally-respected scholars, artists, scientists, cultural citizens, and organizations to discuss ideas of creative placemaking as it relates to Acadiana. Creative placemaking refers to the idea of using the arts and culture of an area as economic drivers and to strengthen the idea and identity of a place—something Louisiana has long excelled at. Immediately following, NUNU will present its annual Fire and Water Celebration April 21—23. Enjoy food and fun while taking in the works of local artists, craftsmen, and performers.

April 21—22, head to Parks for the annual Parks Cracklin Cookoff. Local teams will face off to see who can make the most delicious, most divine, most just-one-more-okay-ONE-more pork cracklins. Proceeds from the event go toward the construction of a new baseball park for the children of parks, so it is your duty to go and eat fried pork skin that weekend.
