Based on Doug Atchison's inspirational 2006 family film, this heartwarming drama tells the story of Akeelah, a determined young girl who overcomes numerous challenges to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Leading the cast as Akeelah is local actress Jasmine Gray, debuting at New Venture Theatre. She stars opposite Baton Rouge veteran actor Spencer Howard, who plays her spelling coach, Dr. Larabee. 7:30 pm Friday; 3 pm & 7:30 pm Saturday; 3 pm Sunday. $27, or $22 for students.
