Blessing of the Flotilla
Make for the lake—Lake St. John in Ferriday, that is—to lounge in boats, water ski and barbecue anything that doesn't move fast enough.

When Natchez enters summer’s grip, its residents are well-known for their propensity to “make for the lake”—Lake St. John in Ferriday, that is—where they lounge in boats, water ski and barbecue things as if their lives depended on it. Arguably, the season for lake-based lunacy reaches its climax on Independence Day weekend with the annual Blessing of the Flotilla. Expect a parade of lavishly decorated pleasure craft in various states of seaworthiness, to be blessed by members of the clergy against water-loggedness or empty coolers for the coming year. Event more or less begins at 2 pm. If you're competing for a boat decoration award, registration will be $5 at Neely’s Spokane Resort, from 9 am to noon. Best viewing is to be had at Spokane Marina, The Dock, and Lake St. John Grocery Marina. (318) 481-0182.
