Inspired by a real-life Louisiana industrial disaster in 2012, Lifelike Creatures tells the story of Tara Saint-Romain, a thirteen-year-old who struggles to care for her addicted mother and keep them both above water when a catastrophic sinkhole renders them, and much of their fictional town of Terrefine, Louisiana, homeless. Author Rebecca Baum is a rural Louisiana native currently living in Greenwich Villiage in New York—Lifelike Creatures is her debut novel.
