Louisiana State Parks host both festive and educational events throughout the month of December.

Each month the good folks at Louisiana State Parks send us a listing of information for all the programs taking place at park properties during the month to come. The December calendar contains dozens of programs, ranging from dutch oven-cooking demonstrations to guided birdwatching hikes. So don't spend this time of year indoors; visit the wide open spaces cared for by the State Parks system. Here is a small sampling of adventures on offer.
- On December 8, the Louisiana State Arboretum in Ville Platte hosts a program concerning flying squirrels at 1 pm. Learn about the southern flying squirrel by looking at its behavior, habitat, and nesting. The program will including building a squirrel box to take home. Registration is limited to ten. $15. - On December 15, come to the Poverty Point World Hertiage Site to learn about the atlatl, an ancient hunting tool used by the inhabitants of Poverty Point of yore, and even try your skills with it first-hand. 10 am (318) 926-5492 .
- Celebrate Christmas in a Victorian Parlor at Fairview-Riverside State Park in Madisonville, with a holiday-decorated trees and a presentation of popular gifts of the times and examples of superstitions and customs that helped shape Christmas celebrations still carried on today. (985) 845-3318. Tuesdays through Thursdays by apportment, Fridays and Saturdays 1 pm - 4pm until December 22.
