"Bodies of Knowledge" Opening Reception
New Orleans Museum of Art 1 Collins C. Diboll Circle, New Orleans, Louisiana 70124
Be one of the first to see the new collaborative exhibition, Bodies of Knowledge, at the New Orleans Museum of Art, with an opening reception as part of the Friday Nights at NOMA series.
At 5 pm, guests can settle in at the museum's front entrance for a performance of Edward Spots' and Donna Crumb's new dance work, "Black Magic." The performance unfolds in five movements: Black Suffering, Black Anger, Black Beauty, Black Love, and Black Joy. It explores African American cultural identity through dance and the body, and depicts joy as a form of resistance to dominant depictions of the black experience, while considering what is often forgotten and omitted from prevalent representations of black life. The work will be performed by Spots, Crump, and twelve youth dancers from Dancing Grounds.
Throughout the evening, live music will also be provided by The Amigos, who specialize in samba traditionally played around a table with a variety of Brazilian percussion and string instruments. The group is formed by a mix of Brazilian and US natives, including Ezra Spira-Cohen, Felipe Leite, Leo Oliveira, Nicolas Bell, Scott Myers, and Tedo Oliveira.
From 6 pm–7 pm, artists Adriana Corral, Manon Bellet, and Garrett Bradley will discuss their individual installations in Bodies of Knowledge.
Regular admission prices apply; free for NOMA members. More information at noma.org.
