Leave the X-Men to the megaplex. Each month, the Manship Theatre offers a slate of films and special events, from beloved classics to live speaker series. Here's what's in store for January:
January 21: National Geographic Live Speaker Series' Kevin Hand: The Search for Life Beyond Earth: In this is highly acclaimed speaker series bringing the world’s best scientists, explorers, authors, photographers, and filmmakers to the stage, Hand talks about his work helping to plan a NASA mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa to investigate evidence of a vast subsurface ocean which could sustain primitive forms of life on this alien world nearly 600 million miles from our planet. 7:30 pm; $38.
January 24: Spoof Night! with Waterworld (1995): Baton Rouge's own Family Dinner Comedy troupe celebrates their love for the 1995 film Waterworld. The drinks will flow and the laughs will be plenty. Bring a date or a group of friends for this super fun show. Bar will open at 6:30 pm, while the show begins at 7:30 pm; $12.
January 26: Walk-On: The Story of Rosa Parks: While the rhythms of rock and roll were shaking the social fabric of the country, deep down an even more important transformation was about to take place. In Montgomery, Alabama, a determined activist named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus. In this play presented by Mad River Theatre Works, music and drama weave together to tell the story of Rosa Parks from her childhood in rural Alabama to her famous decision to “sit down and be counted.” 2 pm. $18.
