Lamar Family Chamber Series: Impressionist String Quartets
First United Methodist 930 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
Join the Baton Rouge Symphony principal players for the string quartets of MauriceRavel and Claude Debussy, evocative of the great French Impressionist painters. Principal Violin Borislava Iltcheva says of the music,“When I perform this music I feel that I am painting in muted pastels with my bow!” In the history of western music, it is hard to find a greater rebel than Claude Debussy. Considered groundbreaking and highly controversial at the time, Debussy’s music gave voice to the Impressionist Movement. His music is laced with personal sentiment and emotions in an innovative attempt to vividly depict his subject . Deeply influenced by nature, art and music from other cultures, his music sometimes sounds dream-like.Also included on the program is a collage-style work with musical quotations by Russian composer Alfred Schnittke. Schnittke was among another group of musical rebels appearing on the scene 20 years after Debussy, who spawned an even more powerful movement and return to logic, structure and reason in composition. $35. 7:30 pm. brso.org.
