Listening for Early New Orleans Jazzwomen
Williams Research Center 410 Chartres Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70130
Scholar of gender, jazz, and American Studies Sherrie Tucker will speak on women's participation in early jazz. The traditional telling of the stories places men at the center of the birth of jazz in Storyville; women were present, but they were, er... otherwise engaged. Tucker has researched early female musicians for her work for the New Orleans Jazz Heritage park, and will present more complex stories about the women involved in the early days of one of the United States' most distinct musical forms. 6 pm at the Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres St. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended. wrc@hnoc.org or(504) 523-4662 to reserve a seat. hnoc.org.
