The Hilliard University Art Museum welcomes an exclusive exhibit of works by Pierre Bonard, a key contributor to the Post-Impressionist movement and co-founder of Les Nabis, an avant-garde painting group. Basing their name on the Hebrew word for “prophets”, the painters were inspired by Paul Gauguin’s Symbolist approach to painting in which color served a spiritual, rather than descriptive, function.
Pierre Bonnard: Landscapes from Le Cannet is the first solo exhibition of the artist's work in Louisiana and features twenty-four works on loan from the permanent collection of the Musée Bonnard in France; the exhibit is guest curated by Musée Bonnard Curator Véronique Serrano. Primarily focusing on Bonnard’s landscapes, this exhibition celebrates his vision of Le Cannet—which is notable not only as Bonnard’s home, but is uniquely distinguished as Lafayette’s sister city in France. The exhibit is on view from May 27—August 12 with a public reception on June 9 from 6 pm–8 pm. hilliardmuseum.org.
