Preserving Our Place

Cary Saurage Community Arts Center 233 Saint Ferdinand, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge is highlighting the photographic work of two indigenous artists: Chantel Commardelle, tribal executive secretary of the Jean Charles Choctaw Nation on the Isle de Jean Charles; and Dennis Davis, community artist of the Native Inupiaq Village in Shishmaref, Alaska. The exhibition, titled Preserving Our Place, holds lenses to the stark impacts of climate change taking place in the photographers' native homes. Alongside the photographs, there will be artifacts and narratives further illustrating and contextualizing the climate change in these locales. An opening reception, which will include traditional dancing and drumming from the Isle de Jean Charles region, as well as traditional Choctaw food, will take place on February 4 from 5:30 pm–7:30 pm. Reserve your spot for the opening reception on Eventbrite. Free. artsbr.org.
