St. Joseph’s Altar Celebration
to
Vermilionville 300 Fisher Road, Lafayette, Louisiana 70508
Vermilionville invites the public to visit its St. Joseph’s Altar this week. Originally an Italian Catholic tradition, the St. Joseph’s Altar made its way into local Cajun and Creole churches after WWI and WWII. The tradition is still practiced to this day. Visitors to the Vermilionville exhibit will learn about the first altar erected in the town square of Sicily, Italy, several centuries ago as well as current-day altar traditions and the meanings of the items placed upon them. Visitors will also leave with a small bag of treats—complete with a lucky fava bean! 10 am–4 pm. Regular admission fees; memberships are honored. vermilionville.org.
