Founded in 1993 by several Tulane Faculty members, the New Orleans Shakespeare Festival at Tulane has become one of the most significant theatre companies in the Gulf South. Each season typically consists of two mainstage productions, an intern production, and various lagniappe events. Here are some highlights for June & July:
• June 2—June 18, The Taming of the Shrew: A bawdy comedy that turns raw and heartbreaking, this play confronts the intimate makings of a servant. As Petruchio sets out to "tame" the unbridled Katherina–and men vie for the affections of the dutiful Bianca–themes of disguise, subversion, and costume run rampant.
• July 7—July 23, The Tempest: Wrongly accused and exiled for twelve years, Prospero sets out for revenge. However, he finds redemption in the process. Both magical and moving, Shakespeare’s masterpiece questions what it means to love and to forgive. It’s a tale that the whole family will enjoy.
• July 19, By Any Scenes Necessary: The festival partners with New Orleans’ hottest ensemble theatre company, The NOLA Project, for a unique, one night only event. By Any Scenes Necessary is a riotous theatre/improv hybrid that will attempt to recreate Shakespeare’s masterpiece Romeo & Juliet without a script. Actors and long-form improvisers will come together to tell the story using only their wits, wiles, and imagination.
All shows are at Tulane's Lupin Theater. For times, tickets, and other details visit, neworleansshakespeare.org.
