My newest lifelong-learning tidbit is from my first visit to Puerto Rico: These pretty blue bricks pave some streets in old San Juan. They were used for ballast on the Spanish ships that came to the new world and were then left behind, replaced on the return trip with gold plundered from the indigenous people. My other favorite discoveries were two fascinating forts and some beautiful public art. Delta currently offers round-trip flights from New Orleans starting at $272, a good deal for the normally pricey Caribbean.
