Cruising About

Baton Rouge artist Terri Dakmak has been a watercolor devotee since someone introduced her to the medium in her early twenties. “I love the way the paintbrush feels when it touches the paper,” she exclaimed. “I love the way the color goes down, because with watercolor you can never do exactly the same thing twice.” The medium guides the style, too. “I used to paint architecture, a lot of buildings,” she noted, “and I used to be the kind of artist who had to paint every brick. “But watercolor has made me looser, especially in the lines. The medium frees you up to paint more a feeling or an idea of what a pelican is or looks like, rather than feeling that you need to paint every feather. And that’s magical to me.”
