This is, in our estimation, one in a list of thirty marvelous places, flavors, events, and experiences that anyone who lives in—or loves—our part of the world should experience at least once in his or her lifetime.

Drive west out of Woodville, Mississippi into the Tunica Hills and there’s terrain no flatlander familiar with the Gulf South floodplain would ever expect. It’s steep! A treasure to discover, the Clark Creek Natural Area rewards energetic explorers with miles of hiking trails through the dense upland hardwood forest that blankets the Tunica Hills—the southwestern-most tendril of the Appalachian range. Concealed here is a daisy chain of waterfalls that directs silvery streams of cool water over a series of drops that range from ten to thirty feet in height. Clamber down and cool off beneath the chattering falls, and keep your eyes peeled for deer and turkeys as you stride through the oak and beech forest that stretches unbroken for miles and miles and miles. Parking at 366 Fort Adams/Pond Road, Woodville, Miss. mdwfp.com under the ‘State Parks’ tab.
