Art After Hours: Feast for the Eyes (& All the Senses!)

An extra helping of this summer's food-centric exhibitions

Can't get enough of the Louisiana Art & Science Museum during the day? Luckily for you, the museum holds Art After Hours, an evening event that gives patrons a unique chance to explore the current exhibitions along with a little extra entertainment and enlightenment. This installment, “Feast for the Eyes (& All the Senses!),” promises to be a real treat for art-lovers and gourmands alike.

One big draw is being able to savor the museum's three new exhibitions away from the summer crowds. And there's a lot there to digest! From the early days of photography to the International Space Station, our fascination with food is constant and complex. Feast for the Eyes: The Story of Food in Photography, Capitol City Contemporary 4: Food, Glorious Food, and Food in Space: The Evolution of Dining in Orbit work in concert to let visitors explore the diverse ways humanity approaches this seemingly basic need.

Once you've whetted your artistic appetite in the galleries, indulge the rest of your senses. Listeners of local radio will recognize the dulcet tones and engaging humor of Poppy Tooker, host and executive producer of Louisiana Eats! as she gives a talk on her favorite subject: food, of course. Indulge idle hands with interactive projects and idle palates with delicious food from local restaurateurs. Still hungry? Don't miss your chance to win a gift card to DIG's Restaurant Week and take your newly-educated appetite out for a night on the town.

“In Louisiana, we understand the importance of food! Food is so much more than just something we eat; it brings people together,” Elizabeth Weinstein, the Art & Science Museum’s Assistant Director for Interpretation & Chief Curator.

So come together with your fellow connoisseurs on Thursday, June 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 for a celebration of eating and watching—in an actually enjoyable sense—what we eat. Tickets are free for LASM members, $10 for nonmembers, and $8 for students with ID (bonus: students are granted a whole year's membership to the museum with their entry fee). This event is sponsored by Dig Baton Rouge and 89.3 WRKF.
