Brookhaven's Best Bites

We Southerners are known for our affinity for eating well. When done right, a meal is an event. In Brookhaven, deep in the heart of Mississippi's Capital/River region, it comes as no surprise that the locals know this best. While you're sure to enjoy a meal at any of the town's establishments, we've included some of our recommendations below. 

At Betty’s Eat Shop, owner and Chef Matt Fitzsimmons crafts upscale Southern fare that resonates with diners used to comfort food favorites. Within the warmly lit, chic interior of a historic storefront downtown, Fitzsimmons—a Brookhaven native who returned to his hometown after years training in kitchens across the U.S.—prepares traditional culinary offerings with a slightly experimental verve, such as shrimp and grits topped with sausage, purple hullpeas, and greens; fried green tomatoes garnished with pimento cheese and onion jam; short rib grilled cheese made with black pepper mayo and white cheddar. “In my travels around the country working at various restaurants under great chefs, I always knew I wanted to come back to Brookhaven and share my love for great cuisine with my hometown,” said Fitzsimmons.

For a taste of classic Mississippi smoked barbecue adapted for the modern palate, Magnolia Blues BBQ Co. strives to embody their store slogan, “a cut above the rest," by presenting a lineup of creative takes on old favorites. From a beautiful new space downtown, the eatery serves a menu populated with creative fusion dishes such as BBQ spaghetti, magnolia tacos, and hog wild burgers.

You can’t come to Brookhaven without a pass by Janie's Pastry Shop. The downtown bakery, founded in 1939, is a beloved Brookhaven staple that generations of locals have grown up with. Peek into the display case and find sweet treats like donuts, Christmas cookies, haystacks, and more. The family owned and operated storefront also serves a savory roster of favorites, including its world famous chicken on a stick, seafood and po-boy plates, and hot and cold sandwiches. 

Opened in 2013 by Chester and Cassandra Chism, Chism’s Diner is a busy hole-in-the-wall known for their burgers and plate lunch specials. From its downtown Brookhaven location, Georgia Blue is a well-frequented restaurant known for their weekly live music and daily blue plate specials. Last but not least, you're guaranteed to find something to love at Broma’s Deli. Founded in 2002 and family-owned, Broma's menu of cafe-style soups, salads, and signature sandwiches is fresh and flavorful. From spuds loaded with all the fixings to Broma's famous chicken salad, there's something for everyone.
