Good Eats on the Cajun Bayou Food Trail

A self-guided culinary journey along Louisiana's Cajun Bayou

by

Driving along a bayou named “The Fork,” it’s no surprise to find plenty of places to stop for a memorable lunch or dinner. Want to eat like a local? You could join the lunch rush at landmark establishments like Politz’s Restaurant in Thibodaux or Harry’s PoBoys in Larose, but to be sure of hitting all the highlights, download a copy of the Cajun Bayou Food Trail, which charts a culinary course between all the top spots, all the way from Thibodaux to Port Fourchon. The Cajun Bayou Food Trail also features a “Passport” section. Collect a stamp from 15 participating restaurants and you’ll receive a complimentary t-shirt honoring your culinary commitment. Taking this self-guided culinary journey through Lafourche, you’ll discover a wealth of family-run restaurants serving creative dishes. Here are a few highlights.

Mommie Jo’s Restaurant in Cut Off keeps them coming back with fresh-caught seafood and rotating daily specials. On a recent day those specials included shrimp fricassee, fried chicken with carrot soufflé, and a fried seafood stuffed potato. The restaurant is on the banks of Bayou Lafourche, so you can sit at a wooden table right on the water.

Set a course for Raceland’s Bayou Boucherie Specialty Meat Market, for boudin, of course, but also platters of fresh cuts, kabob skewers, meatballs and sausage (the blue pepper honey sausage links are a house specialty). The store is a mecca for carnivores, renowned for house-made Hog Head cheese, various jerkies, boudin burritos, and a range of local seasonings. On the side of the building there’s a sign that reads “C’est si bon!” And yes, it’s so good.

The signature side dishes available at Thibodaux’s Grady V’s spice up bistro fare that is rich in traditional Cajun flavors. The result: creative dishes including boudin egg rolls, red bean hummus, and blue crab beignets. During spring and summer, these flavorful dishes are served with a side of live music, on the restaurant’s back porch, with views across the tree-studded lawn.
