One of Louisiana’s more beloved nicknames, a “Sportsman’s Paradise,” rings especially true in Livingston Parish. A whopping four hundred-plus miles of waterways, along with the 124,000-acre Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area, make Livingston a haven to adventurers and outdoors enthusiasts.

“What we have to offer as far as our scenic rivers is breathtaking,” says David Richardson, a Livingston native and prolific fisherman. Richardson was born and raised on the bayou, so it’s only fitting that his preferred method of travel is by airboat, but he notes that exploring the swamps and rivers via canoe or kayak is just as fine a way to spend a Saturday. When Richardson has friends visit, he takes them on a waterborne tour of his home and they’re “awe-struck by the beauty of our waterways,” he says.

Livingston’s natural areas are the dream playground for the rugged outdoorsman who likes to work for his food and take to the water for fun. Ample in game for hunting or fishing, expect to fish for crappie sac-a-lait and bass-bream during the fall in Lake Maurepas. Hunt for small game such as waterfowl, squirrel, and rabbit, or try your luck at the gator lottery.
