Road to Shubuta by Mississippi artist Noah Saterstrom.
Our friend and neighbor Mississippi will celebrate her 200th anniversary of statehood on December 10, 2017. The official Hallmark list of recommended anniversary gifts doesn’t reach that high, so the Mississippi Museum of Art has come up with its own excellent idea: a series of bicentennial art exhibitions, taking place in twelve venues across the state, celebrating Mississippi’s long history as the inspiration for works of art.
These exhibits all draw from the collections of the Mississippi Museum of Art, with themes as diverse as quilts, abstract art, and The Women of Eudora Welty. The capstone exhibit, Picturing Mississippi, 1817–2017: Land of Plenty, Pain, and Promise, opens in December at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, in conjunction with the opening of two all-new museums: the Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum.
