This month’s mix slams the brakes on the wheels heading west across South Louisiana and turns back east down Interstate 10. A few months ago we juked and high-stepped to the soulful stylings of Crescent City classics and maybe even a few songs that came out of left field. Now we return to the city with so much musical culture, from jazz to soul to funk to blues, that making one of these mixes is akin to stuffing a sombrero in a suitcase.

The Mix
Prepare yourself for fighting words from Ernie K. Doe, Indian marches, second lines, Mardi Gras celebratin’, and the inherent soul standards. If I were to make every one of these about New Orleans, I think I very well could because part of making mixes is do just that … mixing. The music of New Orleans brews one of the most beautiful gumbos I could ever work with. Sure it takes a little effort and taste on my part to weave the right songs together but it’s the simultaneous amounts of diversity and togetherness that make almost any combination of New Orleans Music flow effortlessly.
