A History of Italian Immigration in New Orleans
Gallier Historic House 1126 Royal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70112
Don't miss this evening's lecture from Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses, where Professor Justin Nystrom of Loyola University will elucidate "The History of Italian Immigration in New Orleans." By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the blocks surrounding Gallier House became known as "Little Palermo" due to the influx of Sicilian immigrants to the French Quarter. The first Italians to arrive in New Orleans were drawn by way of the Sicilian lemon import industry as early as the 1830s. Nysom shares the impact of this vibrant culture in the ethnic milieu of the Crescent City, drawing from his forthcoming book Creole Italian: How Sicilian Immigrants Shaped the Culture of America's Most Interesting Food Town. Wine presentation at 5:30 pm; presentation at 6 pm at Gallier Historic House. $7; free for members. (504) 274-0746.
