These classes at serene St. Joseph Abbey offer the creatively inclined a chance to hone artistic skills in various media.
Leonardo's Legacy Intro: Led by artist-in-residence and Artistic Director Lyn Hill Taylor, this four week course introduces students to Leonardo da Vinci's treatise on painting and how his ideas dovetail with modern neuroscience and our understanding of the contemplative life. Session one runs March 9–30. Session two runs April 6–27. 10 am–1 pm. $150 per four weeks of instruction.
Leonardo's Legacy Plus: Painting, Science, and the Life of the Soul: Intended for those who have already completed the Leonardo's Legacy Introduction Class with Lyn Taylor. Each session of the three-hour course will have its own focus on learning. Visit saintjosephabbey.com/abbeyartworks to register for available sessions. 9 am–noon. $150 per four weeks of instruction.
Landscape, Cityscape & Portrait Painting: Alan Flattmann will guide students on painting in an impressionistic manner, using broken color and loose brush strokes. Students may choose to work in pastel or oil. Tuesdays, March 10–June 26. 10 am–1 pm. $360 per eight weeks of instruction.
Intro to Drawing: Losing Fear & Making Your Mark: This course offers students the chance to explore and develop an understanding of drawing technique and personal expression. Taught by Robert Labranche. Fridays through June 26, 2 pm–5 pm. $300 per eight weeks of instruction.
Drawing from the Soul/Mixed Media Drawing: Taught by Robert LaBranche, this course is intended for students with some drawing experience. Wednesdays through July 22, 2 pm–5 pm. $300 per eight weeks of instruction.
Intro to Watercolor: For beginners, this course celebrates the simplicity and joy of watercolor painting. Saturdays, 10 am–1 pm. $150 per four weeks of instruction.
Classical Printmaking: Led by master printmaker Phillip Sage, this course will educate in the rare art of printmaking—the most respected and valued technique for replicating your work. Monotype and etching classes are also offered year-round Sage offers individualized scheduling. Wednesdays, 10 am–1 pm. $325 per eight weeks of instruction.
Open Studio Time: Open to all, no instruction included. Mondays, 1 pm–7 pm. $40 per month.
