"Orange Palms," FLUX Series
Using textiles as a medium with which to ponder, Yemeni-Bosnian artist Alia Ali creates mesmerizing photographic portraits composed of individuals concealed by vibrant textile patterns. Through this multi-cultural exploration of material, art, and the self, Ali presents the complexities of diverse cultures—the ways in which textiles evolve and migrate through different groups of people, and the ways that the history of exploitative global economies is shrouded in the beauty of a product, that at the very same time, often stands as a universal representation for a culture's most intimate and revered traditions. Displayed in the New Orleans Museum of Art's Great Hall, the museum's neoclassical entrance lobby, Alia Ali: FLUX stands in a space that represents the influx of several cultures coming together in NOMA's collection. The exhibition will be on view until August 2, 2020. noma.org.
