The Arts Council of Pointe Coupee is hosting a series of nineteen workshops this year on a wide variety of subjects from literature to visual arts, thanks to a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts. Here are the February and March events to look forward to (keep an eye out for the rest as they're announced):
February 17 & 24: Poetry Workshops with Jonathan Mayers: Mayers, the current Baton Rouge Poet Laureate, is a visual artist, writer, and cultural activist who utilizes Kouri-Vini (Louisiana Creole)—which was spoken by his ancestors—in his poetry and visual art. The focus of the workshops will be creatively expressing thoughts through poetry, utilizing surrealist exercises and discussion about relationships, identity, culture, and something relatable in Louisiana: recent and past storm experiences. Free verse and acrostic poetry will be emphasized, while all forms of poetic self-expression are welcome. Participants will also learn basic greetings in Kouri-Vini (Louisiana Creole). Materials provided, though participants are encouraged to bring their own writing materials. Participants will also have the chance to convert their poetic expression in this workshop into visual art at a later workshop with artist Sarah Fabre (details to come). 4 pm–5:45 pm at the New Roads Library.
March 12: Water-Media Workshop with Cherie Fry: This workshop led by local artist Cherie Fry will teach participants to "Simplify and Paint," offering step-by-step demonstrations and guidance for mixing water-soluble paint, using water-soluble graphite, and applying brushwork for anyone from beginners to advanced artists. Participants will learn how to use a reference image to create original art by blending texture, color, and paint. Supplies and information about registration fees will be provided to those who register. 9 am–4 pm at the Poydras Center.
