In conjunction with the Historic New Orleans' Collection's exhibition Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean, the HNOC is presenting Concert Spirituel: Saint-Domingue and New Orleans at St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. This concert will be the fifteenth installment in the series “Musical Louisiana: America’s Cultural Heritage,” presented by THNOC and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Pedro Memelsdorff. For this special evening of music, musicians will revive two all-but-forgotten forgotten sets of music from the Caribbean in the eighteenth century. “This year’s LPO concert, a complement to THNOC’S exhibition Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean, offers a glimpse of the beauty and melancholy of French-Caribbean spiritual music — sounds performed during a time of extreme social injustice, tension, and pain,” explained Conductor Memelsdorff. Featured guest soloists include Hyngun Cho (continuo cello), Markéta Cukrová (mezzo-soprano), Jean-Christophe Dijoux (harpsichord), Claron McFadden (soprano), Belén Vaquero (soprano), Jonathan Woody (bass baritone) and the OperaCréole choir. Pre-concert lecture at 5:45 pm. Concert at 7:30 pm. Free. hnoc.org.
