Destination: Latin America

LSU Museum of Art 100 Lafayette Street, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70802
Latin American art, vivid and varied as it is, has been shaped by significant historical and artistic movements unique to its region and cultures. In Destination: Latin America, an exhibition on display at the LSU Museum of Art through February, these movements are looked at more closely and alongside one another—offering an expansive retrospective of works coming out of this part of the world. The exhibition includes works by artists affiliated with the creative revolution that emerged following the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920; sculptures and paintings by key South American artists after World War II that explored color, form, space, and motion; Caribbean and South American art inspired by the outside influences of African art, surrealism, and magical realism. The exhibition will also focus on the challenges artists faced while living under dictatorships during the 1960s, 70s, and 90s, as well as the work of contemporary artists addressing modern concerns such as globalization, violence, and social criticism. lsumoa.org.
Don't miss: An opening reception will be held on October 24, featuring a gallery talk with curator Patrice Giasson, PhD at 6:30 pm. $10; $5 for students and faculty; free for members.
