Moving ever into this 21st century, we live in a world continuously wrought by the tensions of innovation and destruction, new and lost, created and found. These dichotomies and how they translated into the region of the lower Mississippi River Valley, captivated photographer Richard Sexton for decades. In one hundred black-and-white photographs, on display at the Historic New Orleans Collection in the exhibition Enigmatic Stream: Industrial Landscapes of the Lower Mississippi River, Sexton captures the essence of this strange and complicated region, exploring the American impulse to exploit while leaving just enough room for natural life. On exhibit from September 17–April 5. Free admission.
An opening reception will take place on the evening of Tuesday, September 17, featuring an appearance by photographer Richard Sexton. Free and open to the public, though registration is required at hnoc.org or (504) 598-7146.
