Film Premiere of "Mavis: One Simple Sentence"
NUNU Arts and Culture Collective 1510 Courtableau Highway, Arnaudville, Louisiana 70512
It's hard to talk about French language preservation without talking about Mavis Fruge. The eighty-something year old Acadiana culture bearer has dedicated her life to reviving the Louisiana French language that was smothered out of her community in 1921, when Louisiana lawmakers banned it in classrooms. By hosting "French Tables" throughout the community and encouraging the concept of "cultural economy," she has attracted global attention and enacted monumental change, all culminating in her dream, the St. Luc French Immersion and Cultural Campus.
In a new documentary film by Bill Rodman and Flo Ulmer-Rodman, Mavis's journey is honored and celebrated. Called Mavis: One Simple Sentence, the film will premiere at NUNU Arts & Culture Collective this month. 6 pm. Free. nunuaccollective.homesteadcloud.com.
