George Washington: The Myths and the Man

"First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen." The commander-in-chief who led the Continental Army and the unified thirteen colonies is the focus of the Louisiana Old State Capitol’s newest exhibit, George Washington: Myths and the Man. This exhibit explores the facts behind one of the most popular figures in American history. Through romanticized paintings by artist Jean Leon Gerome Farris and personal artifacts, the exhibit delves deeper into the “Father of Our Country.” The artifacts provide guests with insight to Washington’s private life and what drove him to be a public servant. In addition to leading the Continental Army, Washington served as the first president of the United States where he established precedents that continue to define the office.
