Shakyamuni Buddha, late 18th–early 19th century, jadeite. Promised gift, The James R. and Ann A. Peltier Collection of Chinese jade.
For millennia, humankind's expressions of worship have frequently come to bear in the form of artistry. Narratives of divinity become two-dimensional, carved of stone, and manifested in even the most mundane objects. In the LSU Museum of Art's exhibition Gods & Things, religion is explored through a selection of objects, ranging from the 2nd to 20th centuries, both sacred and quotidian—all from South and East Asia, representing the practices and philosophies of Hinduisim, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, and Shintoism in ordinary people's every day lives. On exhibit through February 23. lsumoa.org.
