GU272 and Ascension Parish: The Jesuit and Episcopal Connection to Slavery
Episcopal Church of Ascension 518 Nicholls St, Donaldsonville, Louisiana 70346
A new exhibit from the River Road African American Museum at the Episcopal Church of Ascension traces the fascinating story of GU272, a group of enslaved people purchased and trafficked by the Jesuits of Georgetown University in Maryland to Louisiana sugarcane planters Dr. Jesse Batey and Henry S. Johnson. The church is particularly relevant because Governor Henry S. Johnson was co-founder of the Episcopal Church. Registration is required. 10 am–2 pm.
