dom gregory de wit art
Most of the paintings by Benedictine monk Dom Gregory de Wit reside on abbey walls and church ceilings, but visitors to the St. Tammany Art Association will have the chance to see 29 of his original works in its new exhibition, Hand of the Master, on display in the main Miriam Barranger Gallery. The son of a fabric-maker, de Wit's art pays great attention—often with doses of humor—to the rich clothes and fabrics inspired by Italian Byzantine mosaics, often with vibrant patterns and strong outlines, and treats each of his Biblical subjects with the ability to be discussed from both secular and religious perspectives. The Art Association will host a special opening reception on December 14 from 6 pm–9 pm, featuring Christmas carols sung by the St. Joseph Abbey Seminar Choir, and an Expert and Archivist Panel Discussion on January 18 from 1 pm–3 pm. sttammany.art.
