The Arts Council's exhibit "Healing History," on display until February 24 in the Shell Gallery at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center.
The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge and its Artist Advisory Board are celebrating Black History Month and its theme “Black Health and Wellness” with an art exhibition in the new Shell Gallery at the Cary Saurage Community Arts Center titled Healing History, curated by local artist and activist Kristen Downing. Artists featured in the exhibition include Kristen Downing, Randell Henry, Antoine Lacey, Kayla Magee, Darlene Moore, Rayne Myers, Ashli Ognelodh, and Mike Weary. The Shell Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am–4:30 pm, and on Saturdays in February from 10 am–2 pm. artsbr.org/shell.
The following free Community Programming is being held at the Saurage Center in conjunction with the exhibit:
Sunday, February 13: Eat to Live: Navigating Nutrition and Mental Health—this seminar will address the ways diet impacts depression, anxiety, and other chronic illnesses, educate participants on how to have a balanced diet, and includes a "healthy food demonstration". Led by registered dietician Ellen C. McKnight and licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Meghan Borne Kilbert. 2 pm–4 pm in the Shell Gallery.
Thursday, February 17: The Choreography of Motherhood: Open Rehearsal & Artist Talk—Nyama Contemporary Dance will perform and discuss their creative process as well as the connections between movement, health, wellness, and motherhood. 7 pm–8 pm in the John & Virginia Noland Black Box Studio.
Monday, February 21: Closing Reception & Millennial Talk—A closing reception for the exhibit and talk presented by the Office of Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge. 6 pm–8 pm on the first floor of the Saurage Center.
