Guy de Montlaur
"Auto-portrait sans indulgence"
As part of the National World War II Museum's 2019 commemoration of D-Day's 75th anniversary (read more about their programs in this article from our April 2019 issue), the art of French fine-art painter and veteran Guy de Montlaur will be on display in the museum's Joe W. and Dorothy D. Brown Foundation Special Exhibit Gallery until October 20, 2019
After surviving hand-to-hand combat with the French army at the onset of WWII and on Sword Beach with the Free French Commandos on June 6, 1944, de Montlaur suffered severe wounds that he carried for the rest of his life.
These experiences, physical and mental, were later channeled into his work as an artist through vivid, abstract paintings that explore the experience and trauma of war. Curated by the National World War II Museum's Larry Decuers, In Memory of What I Cannot Say brings de Montlaur's journey together with artworks, archival photography, and artifacts from his time in service.
